3rd Grade

Recent/Current Projects -

Third grade artists recently completed a weaving project inspired by African Kente Cloths.

Discussion -

·       Who could wear Kente Cloths originally? (only members of the Royal family)

·       Nowadays, why would someone who is not royalty wear a Kente Cloth design? (to show pride in African heritage and culture, or admiration for its beauty. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, visited Africa and said that many of the African Textiles he saw influenced some of his costume designs for Star Wars.)

·       Many Kente Cloths were inspired by African proverbs, we substituted positive quotes. What was your positive quote you selected for your Kente Cloth and why did you chose that quote?

·       The colors and symbol/patterns all had special meanings in the Kente cloths. What were the symbols in your project and what did they mean to you? (the symbol was suppose to relate to the quote that served as inspiration for the Kente).

·       Just for fun – next time you watch the movie, Blank Panther, have a contest to see who can find the scenes in which Kente cloths were worn. (I counted 3)
